Varanasi: Kashi is preparing to make a significant mark on India’s sporting landscape with the upcoming International Cricket Stadium at Ganjari, Rajatalab. The much-awaited stadium is reportedly being considered for inauguration on December 2, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to be invited for the event. However, the proposed date and the Prime Minister’s participation are yet to receive official confirmation. A major development surrounding the project is that the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has included Varanasi as a new cricket centre in its 2026-27 domestic season calendar. The association has also allotted two Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy matches to the upcoming stadium, marking an important step towards bringing organised domestic cricket to the city.

UPCA Includes Varanasi in Its 2026-27 Cricket Calendar

The inclusion of Varanasi in the UPCA cricket calendar is an important development for the region’s sporting infrastructure.

As part of the domestic season, the Ganjari International Cricket Stadium is scheduled to host two Cooch Behar Trophy Under-19 fixtures.

The first match will be played between Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry from December 3 to December 6, 2026. The second fixture will feature Uttar Pradesh against Chhattisgarh from December 11 to December 14.

The Cooch Behar Trophy is one of India’s established domestic competitions for Under-19 cricketers. Hosting these fixtures will provide young players with an opportunity to compete at the national domestic level while allowing the new venue to begin its cricketing journey.

BCCI NOC and Inspection: The Key Steps Before Competitive Cricket

Although the stadium’s construction has reached its final stage, receiving the necessary approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains an important requirement before competitive cricket can officially begin.

The stadium needs to undergo an assessment covering the playing pitches, outfield, drainage system, dressing rooms, player facilities, safety arrangements and overall match-day infrastructure.

A BCCI inspection team is expected to assess the venue and submit its findings to the board. The final decision regarding the necessary No-Objection Certificate (NOC) will depend on the inspection report and compliance with the required standards.

The inclusion of Varanasi in the UPCA calendar and the allocation of domestic fixtures are important developments, but they should not be confused with the final grant of BCCI clearance.

Could Varanasi Host IPL and WPL Matches in 2027?

The ambitions surrounding the new stadium extend beyond domestic Under-19 cricket.

According to reports, the UPCA is interested in bringing Women’s Premier League (WPL) matches to Varanasi in 2027. There has also been discussion about the possibility of hosting selected Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the venue in the future.

Representatives associated with the BCCI, Lucknow Super Giants and broadcast teams have reportedly visited the stadium to assess its suitability for major cricket events.

However, no official announcement has been made regarding the allocation of IPL or WPL fixtures to Varanasi. Any such opportunity will depend on the required approvals, infrastructure assessments and tournament arrangements.

December 2 Proposed for Inauguration; PM Modi’s Presence Awaited

The proposed December 2 inauguration has become one of the most anticipated developments surrounding the stadium.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being discussed as a possible chief guest for the opening ceremony. There are also reports suggesting that ICC Chairman Jay Shah and BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla may visit the venue in November to review the facilities and remaining arrangements.

The inspection process is expected to play an important role in assessing the stadium’s readiness for competitive cricket.

However, the final inauguration programme, the date and the Prime Minister’s participation are still awaiting official confirmation.

A Cricket Stadium Inspired by Lord Shiva and Kashi’s Heritage

One of the most distinctive features of the upcoming stadium is its architecture, which draws inspiration from the spiritual and cultural identity of Varanasi.

Developed across approximately 31 acres at an estimated cost of Rs 450 crore, the stadium has been designed with several unique architectural elements.

These include trident-shaped floodlights, a crescent-shaped roof and a media centre inspired by the traditional damru associated with Lord Shiva.

With an approximate seating capacity of 30,000 spectators, the venue is expected to become a major sporting destination for eastern Uttar Pradesh.

A New Opportunity for Cricket in Eastern Uttar Pradesh

The stadium is expected to benefit aspiring cricketers from Varanasi and neighbouring districts, including Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Chandauli and Mirzapur.

The availability of modern cricket infrastructure and national-level domestic fixtures could provide young players with better opportunities to develop their skills and compete at higher levels.

The project could also support local tourism, hospitality, transportation and business activities by attracting cricket fans from different parts of the country.

If the proposed December 2 inauguration takes place as planned, followed by the scheduled domestic fixtures, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter for cricket in Kashi.

For now, attention remains focused on the BCCI inspection, the NOC process, the final inauguration announcement and the possibility of Varanasi hosting bigger cricket tournaments in the coming years.

Disclaimer: The proposed inauguration date of December 2, 2026, and the possible visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are subject to official confirmation.
