NEW DELHI: Cyclone Murasu, developing over the Bay of Bengal, has raised weather concerns across several southern Indian states. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is moving northwestwards towards the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, where it is expected to make landfall. The system is likely to bring strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions along the affected coastal regions. While southern India is expected to experience the primary impact, questions are also emerging about possible weather changes in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi-NCR region.

Cyclone Murasu Approaching Andhra Pradesh Coast

According to the IMD forecast, Cyclone Murasu is expected to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur during the late hours of November 2 and early morning of November 3.

Wind speeds during landfall could reach 100–110 kmph, with gusts of up to 120 kmph. Coastal districts are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, rough sea conditions and possible flooding in low-lying areas.

Kerala Under Heavy Rainfall Alert

Although Kerala is not expected to experience a direct cyclone landfall, the system’s surrounding weather conditions may influence rainfall activity across the state.

The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts, including Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod for November 2.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph are also possible in different parts of Kerala. Rainfall activity is expected to continue in some districts over the following days.

Will Cyclone Murasu Affect Uttar Pradesh and Varanasi?

One of the major questions is whether the cyclone could bring rainfall or strong winds to northern India, particularly Uttar Pradesh and Varanasi.

Based on the currently available forecast, the primary impact of Cyclone Murasu is expected to remain concentrated over southern India, especially coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring regions.

There is currently no clear indication of a significant direct impact or a special cyclone-related warning for Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi.

However, weather systems can evolve, and changes in atmospheric conditions may influence weather patterns in other parts of the country. Residents should follow subsequent IMD updates for any revised forecasts.

What About Delhi-NCR?

Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad are also not currently expected to experience the direct impact of Cyclone Murasu.

The cyclone is moving towards the southern Indian coastline, and there is no clear indication in the available forecast of cyclone-like conditions developing over the Delhi-NCR region due to this system.

Local weather conditions in northern India will continue to depend on separate atmospheric factors.

Safety Advisory and What to Expect Next

Residents in the cyclone-affected coastal regions have been advised to remain alert during heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds. Fishermen should follow official marine weather warnings and avoid entering restricted sea areas.

Overall, Cyclone Murasu is primarily a southern India weather threat. Andhra Pradesh is expected to face the strongest impact, while Kerala may experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi and Delhi-NCR are not currently forecast to face a significant direct impact from the cyclone.
