Jerusalem: Israel has intensified its military operations in the occupied West Bank, particularly in and around Hebron, following an attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and injured three others. The operation has involved house demolitions, security restrictions, military searches and the displacement of Palestinian residents.

According to reports published by the BBC and other international media, the Israeli government announced the operation after two Palestinian gunmen attacked Israeli forces near a checkpoint in the Hebron area on October 23, 2026. Both attackers were subsequently killed by Israeli forces.

What Triggered the Israeli Military Operation?

The latest escalation followed an attack near Hebron in which two Israeli soldiers were killed and three others injured. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a security operation targeting areas associated with the suspected attackers.

Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces would search neighbourhoods, remove weapons and destroy infrastructure they considered connected to militant activities.

Hundreds of Palestinian Families Affected

The military operation has significantly affected civilians living in Hebron. Israeli forces have carried out demolitions of residential buildings, businesses and other infrastructure.

According to Palestinian local officials cited in media reports, at least 200 families have been displaced. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also referred to approximately 2,000 residents being displaced during the operation.

Movement restrictions and security checks have further disrupted daily life for residents.

Israel’s Military Strategy and Security Measures

The Israeli military said its operations were aimed at locating weapons, dismantling militant infrastructure and preventing further attacks.

Israeli forces also announced searches across multiple locations in the West Bank. The operation has raised concerns about the possibility of a wider military campaign in the territory.

International Concerns and Palestinian Response

The Palestinian Authority has called for urgent international intervention, warning that the demolitions and displacement could further worsen the humanitarian situation.

The operation has also drawn criticism from human rights groups, which have questioned the legality of demolishing homes and displacing families in response to attacks.

Israel maintains that its military actions are necessary for national security and preventing further violence.

Situation in Gaza Also Remains Tense

Separately, Israeli military strikes in Gaza have continued despite the ceasefire that began in October 2025. According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 1,550 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire began, although the figures have not been independently verified in every instance.

A United Nations Commission of Inquiry has also published findings alleging serious violations in Gaza and the West Bank. Israel has rejected the commission’s conclusions.

What Happens Next?

The situation remains uncertain as Israeli military operations, Palestinian displacement, and regional security tensions continue. Developments in the West Bank and Gaza could have wider implications for regional stability and international diplomatic efforts.
