Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, is moving closer to a major transformation in its urban transportation system. The much-awaited Kashi Ropeway Project has reached its final stage, with approximately 95% of the construction work completed. Once operational, the ropeway is expected to connect Varanasi Cantt Railway Station with Godowlia in just 16 minutes.
The 3.85-kilometre urban transport project aims to reduce traffic congestion in some of the city’s busiest areas while providing a modern and convenient transportation option for residents, tourists and pilgrims.
Currently, travelling between Cantt and Godowlia by road can take around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Five Stations to Connect Major Areas of Varanasi
The Kashi Ropeway Project will feature five stations along its route: Varanasi Cantt Railway Station, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Girjaghar and Godowlia. Girjaghar is being developed as a technical station.
The corridor will have 29 towers and approximately 148 gondola cabins. Each cabin will have a seating capacity of 10 passengers.
The new transportation system is expected to improve connectivity between the railway station, central Varanasi and important religious destinations.
Ticket Fare and Travel Time
According to the reported fare structure, the complete journey from Cantt to Godowlia is expected to cost Rs 50. Passengers travelling between individual stations are expected to pay around Rs 10 per station.
The entire journey is expected to take approximately 16 minutes, offering a faster alternative to road transportation.
The service could be particularly beneficial for tourists and pilgrims arriving at Varanasi railway station and travelling towards the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and nearby Ganga ghats.

Trial Runs and Final Technical Preparations Underway
With most of the construction completed, attention has shifted towards the remaining work and technical preparations.
Recent updates indicate that trial runs and operational preparations on the Rathyatra-Godowlia stretch are receiving special attention. Safety inspections and other technical procedures will need to be completed before passenger services can begin.
According to the latest reported update from the divisional commissioner, a decision on the formal inauguration date is expected within approximately two weeks.
While some reports indicate that passenger services could begin in December 2026, the final opening date has not yet been officially announced.
A New Chapter for Varanasi’s Tourism and Urban Mobility
Varanasi attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists throughout the year because of its religious and cultural significance. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat and the famous Ganga Aarti remain among the city’s major attractions.
The proposed ropeway service is expected to provide an additional transportation option and potentially reduce pressure on congested city roads.
Beyond improving connectivity, the project could also offer visitors a unique aerial view of the ancient city, adding a new dimension to the Varanasi tourism experience.
As the project approaches completion, residents and visitors are eagerly waiting for the official announcement regarding the start of passenger operations.
The Kashi Ropeway is expected to become an important milestone in Varanasi’s journey towards modern urban transportation while preserving its identity as one of India’s oldest living cities.
