Varanasi: The holy city of Varanasi could soon become a new destination for major cricketing events. The upcoming International Cricket Stadium at Ganjari, Rajatalab, is reportedly being considered as a potential venue for selected Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 matches. If the proposal moves forward, cricket fans in Varanasi could get an opportunity to watch IPL action live in their own city for the first time.

BCCI and LSG Officials Inspect Varanasi Stadium

According to recent reports, officials associated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and broadcasting teams have inspected the upcoming international cricket stadium in Varanasi. The inspection was aimed at assessing the venue’s readiness, including its pitch, outfield, facilities, and suitability for hosting major cricket tournaments. A senior official associated with the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has indicated that there is a possibility of shifting a few IPL matches to the Kashi stadium in the future. However, no official IPL 2027 fixture has been allocated to Varanasi so far.

Could Virat Kohli Play in Varanasi?

One of the biggest talking points among cricket fans is the possibility of watching Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli in action in Varanasi. If Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) feature in the upcoming IPL season and are allocated a match at the Varanasi stadium, fans could potentially get the opportunity to watch Kohli play live. Considering his enormous popularity, his appearance at the Kashi stadium would be a major attraction for local cricket enthusiasts. However, Virat Kohli’s participation in a Varanasi-based IPL match has not been officially confirmed.

RCB vs KKR: Could This Be the Match?

There is also discussion among cricket followers about a possible Royal Challengers Bengaluru versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) encounter in Varanasi. However, neither the BCCI nor the IPL authorities have announced an RCB vs KKR fixture at the Varanasi stadium. The IPL 2027 schedule, including the opening match, venues, and team fixtures, is yet to be officially announced. Therefore, the proposed RCB vs KKR match should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed fixture.

Domestic Cricket Before IPL Matches

Before hosting major tournaments, the stadium is expected to begin its competitive cricket journey with domestic fixtures. The UPCA calendar includes two Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy matches at the upcoming venue. These fixtures will help assess the playing surface and overall match-day arrangements. The stadium will also require the necessary BCCI assessment and clearances before hosting major cricket events.

A New Cricketing Landmark for Varanasi

Developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 450 crore, the Varanasi International Cricket Stadium covers approximately 31 acres and is designed to accommodate around 30,000 spectators. If selected to host IPL 2027 matches, the stadium could mark a significant milestone in the sporting history of Varanasi and strengthen the city’s position on India’s cricketing map. Cricket fans are now waiting for further developments regarding BCCI clearance and the official IPL 2027 schedule.
